von heute auf morgen

  1. (idiomatic) within a short period of time; overnight; suddenly
Synonyms: von einem Tag auf den anderen; mir nichts, dir nichts; (less common) über Nacht
Er hat seine Meinung von heute auf morgen geändert.
    He changed his opinion overnight.
    • 1999, “Die neue Seltsamkeit”, in K.O.O.K, performed by Tocotronic:
Es sei ja auch schwierig so von heute auf morgen / Man habe ja auch noch den Hund zu versorgen
(please add an English translation of this quotation)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • As seen in the example sentence, the phrase is generally not changed when referring to the past. While it would be grammatically possible to say von gestern auf heute (literally from yesterday to today), this would imply that the change actually happened, or was made known, on this very day.
