Etymology

From a noun vobek/vobeg, a singularized plural of *vobog, from a South Slavic language; compare Old Church Slavonic оубогъ (ubogŭ, wretched, poor), Serbo-Croatian убог (poor, miserable), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *ubogъ (poor).[1][2][3]
