Inherited from Proto-Slavic *volšьskъ, from *volxъ, itself from Proto-Germanic *walhaz (foreign). By surface analysis, Vlach +‎ -ský. Cognate with English Vlach, Wallachia, Wales, walnut, French Gaule, Polish Włochy. Doublet of valašský.
