- Moreover, smoking causes: carboxy-hemoglobin production, which blocks oxygen transport in plasma; vasoconstriction, which decreases the lumen of the vessels and reduces blood flow; atheroma, which increases the thickness of arterial walls, thus decreasing blood flow; impaired fibrinolytic activity, which reduces transvascular transport of nutrients to IVD; and viscidation of the blood, which hinders oxygen transport.
