vinho verde
Appearance
English
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Portuguese vinho verde (young wine).
Pronunciation
[edit]- (General American) IPA(key): ˈviːnju ˈvɛɹdi, ˈviːnjoʊ ˈvɛɹdeɪ
Noun
[edit]vinho verde (plural vinho verdes)
- Any instance of a type of wine (often white wine but sometimes rosé wine or red wine) produced in the Minho region of northern Portugal.
Usage notes
[edit]Sometimes written upstyle, Vinho Verde, because in modern usage the name is a DOC. Also sometimes written viño verde or vino verde by English-speakers who misapprehend that the term came from Galician (viño verde) or Spanish (vino verde).
Portuguese
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Literally, “green wine”, a reference to the young age of the grapes; thus, non-overliterally, young wine. Compare other examples of a language's word for green meaning "young" but not necessarily always literally green in color, such as English green, greenhorn, and green cheese.
