Etymology

[edit]

villi (wild) +‎ kissa (cat)

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈʋilːiˌkisːɑ/, [ˈʋilːiˌk̟is̠ːɑ̝]
  • Rhymes: -isːɑ
  • Hyphenation(key): villi‧kissa

Noun

[edit]

villikissa

  1. wild cat, Felis silvestris
  2. (colloquial) feral cat (domestic cat returned to the wild)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • A feral cat may also be called villiintynyt kissa in order to avoid confusion with Felis silvestris. Neither of the two is a constant member of the Finnish fauna. The feral cats usually die during their first winter of freedom.
