Etymology

From Late Middle Dutch vermetel, from vermeten (audacious, overconfident) influenced by -el, originally a reflexive verb meaning “to overestimate oneself, to be overconfident, to mismeasure”, from ver- + meten, related to mate. Equivalent to ver- +‎ meten with assimilation to -el.
