[edit]From Middle High German verantwürten, verantworten, equivalent to ver- + antworten. Cognate of Yiddish פֿאַרענטפֿערן (farentfern), Dutch verantwoorden, Afrikaans verantwoord, Luxembourgish veräntweren, West Frisian ferantwurdzje, Saterland Frisian feroantwoudje and Middle Low German vorantworden.
