Etymology

[edit]

The Century Dictionary (1911) traces this with uncertainty to vehō (carry) +‎ mēns (mind), thus "one who gets carried away in mind" > "ardent"; this appears to be supported by de Vaan.[1] An alternative explanation (Sihler; essentially Lewis and Short) makes the first element vē- (out of) in a fanciful spelling, connecting it to Sanskrit वहिस् (vahis, alternative form of बहिस् (bahís, out)).[2]
