From Proto-Tai *ʰwɯəꟲ (cloud). Cognate with Thai ฝ้า (fâa), Northern Thai ᨺ᩶ᩣ, Khün ᨺ᩶ᩣ, Lao ຝ້າ () or ເຝື້ອ (fư̄a), ᦚᦱᧉ (ḟaa²), Shan ၽႃႈ (phāa) or ၾႃႈ (fāa), Zuojiang Zhuang paj, Saek เวี̂ย.
