[edit]- vohë — Old Tosk
Etymology
[edit]Possibly borrowed from Romance, akin to Italian vapa (“flame”), Romanian văpaie (“flame”),[1][2] although the Italian term is a poetic hapax found in rhyming context,[3] while the Romanian one is actually often derived from Albanian.[4] Alternatively compare Italian afa (“sultriness”), possibly ultimately from a Paleo-Balkan *āpʰā, of which vapë would be the regular Tosk outcome.
