Etymology

[edit]

Apparently a composite of vaca (cow) + loura (in the past, "dark"); so either "dark cow" or perhaps a folk etymology of an older composite pre-Latin word.[1] Cognate with Portuguese vacaloura and Asturian vacalloria.
