vægur

Icelandic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Adjectival formation related to vega (to weigh).[1] Note the semantic shift from "weigh" > "weigh little" > "mild, lenient", which is in contrast to most of the word's relatives across Indo-European, which tend to develop connotations of heaviness (such as English weighty). Despite this, some derivatives retain a "heavy" sense, such as mikilvægur.

Adjective

[edit]

vægur (comparative vægari, superlative vægastur)

  1. indulgent, lenient, tolerant
    Synonyms: mildur, vægilegur
  2. mild, slight
