underground handball (plural underground handballs)

  1. (Australian rules football) A handball which is deliberately bounced on the ground before reaching one's teammate, instead of being passed directly as is typical.
    • 2019 August 10, Sarah Olle, quoting Kinnear Beatson, “AFL 2019: The moment Kinnear Beatson knew James Bell had the skills to make it at AFL level”, in Fox Footy[1]:
He did this underground handball where the pack came at him and he slipped the handball underneath and I specifically remember going to him at quarter time and saying, 'That was really impressive'.
