Etymology

From Proto-Malayic *hulət (worm; maggot), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *quləj (maggot, caterpillar, larva of a metamorphosing insect), from Proto-Austronesian *quləj (type of small worm). Cognate with Indonesian ulat.
