[edit]From Proto-Malayic *hulət (“worm; maggot”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *quləj (“maggot, caterpillar, larva of a metamorphosing insect”), from Proto-Austronesian *quləj (“type of small worm”). Cognate with Indonesian ulat.
