From Proto-Inuit *ukiu- (winter, autumn, year, spend the winter), from Proto-Eskimo *ukju(r) (winter, autumn, year). Compare ukiaq (autumn), and ukiivoq (spends the winter). Cognate to Inuktitut ᐅᑭᐅᖅ (okioq), Inupiaq ukiuq.
