Cognate with Ifè ɔ̀gɔ̃̀rɔ̃̀, Owe Yoruba igọ̀nrùn. Proposed to be derived from Proto-Edekiri *ɔ̀-gʊ̃̀ɾʊ̃̀, it is descended from Volta-Congo roots for neck, compare with Proto-Kwa *kɔŋgɔ, Proto-Benue-Congo *ton, Proto-Bantu *kíngó, Proto-Gbe *-kɔ, ultimately from Proto-Volta-Congo *ˈkɔtĩ
