Etymology

From northern Old High German ahter, a variant of after (“after, behind, along”) with the northern West Germanic development -ft- → -cht-, which in Luxembourgish survives only in a small number of relict words (compare Griecht, Luucht). Cognate with German After (“anus”) and achtern (“abaft”), Dutch achter (“behind”), English after.
