Perhaps from Punic 𐤆𐤓𐤏 (zrʿ, “seed”), although via a Vulgar Latin *zerula.[1] Compare Hebrew זֶרַע (zeraʿ, “seed”), Aramaic זַרְעָא (zarʿā, “seed”) and Arabic زَرْع (zarʕ, “seed”).
