From archaic root *tūn- (heat), from Proto-Uto-Aztecan *toŋV-. Compare Pipil tutūnik (hot), -tutūnia (to heat), and -itūnia (to sweat). Also, compare Classical Nahuatl tonalli (heat of the sun) and tōnatiuh (sun).
