Etymology

From tucano (“toucan”) +‎ taxonomic name Ramphastos toco, with the specific name later reinterpreted as Portuguese toco (“stump”). Likely influenced by English toco toucan, attested since the 19th century.

     The toco toucan, a bird with beautiful plumage, but with a heavy body and equipped with an enormous beak. It flies slowly and highly ungraciously. It hails from Brazil.

     The Orchidary, meanwhile, received two specimens of Toco Toucan from the Zoológico de São Paulo. These exotic birds are known for the beauty in their colors and belong to the largest species in Brazil. It’s worth taking the children to check it out.

     A pesquisa começou há cerca de quatro anos, porém só havia conseguido a reprodução de araçaris, tucanos de porte menor. As três espécies diferentes dessa ave são mais fáceis de acasalar em cativeiro. Mas só agora há avanços para reproduzir os belos e famosos tucanos-tocos, de-bico-verde e de-bico-preto.

     Research began around four years ago, but they had only managed the reproduction of aracaris, smaller toucans. The three different species of this bird are easier to breed in captivity. But only now is there progress in breeding the beautiful and famous toco toucans, green-billed toucans, and black-billed toucans.

     Nas cidades ele encontram alimento de todo tipo, inclusive na flora presente em praças e parques. “Acabamos oferecendo bastante comida nas árvores que são plantadas. Em Campinas, por exemplo, há uma grande variedade de alimentos para os tucanos-toco”, comenta o biólogo.

     In cities they find all sorts of food, even in the flora of parks. “We end up offering them plenty of food in the trees that get planted. In Campinas, for example, there is a wide variety of food for the toco toucans”, the biologist points out.
