Unknown, probably affixed *raṅ +‎ ta-, probably from Proto-Mon-Khmer *raaŋʔ (light, to shine) (compare Vietnamese rạng (to dawn; be brightened, be lightened), Khmer ស្រាង (sraang, to glimmer)).
