[edit]Noun
[edit]torppa
- (historical, Sweden and Finland from 17th to early 20th century) croft, copyhold (farm, part of a larger farm or manor, the rent of which was paid through work on the owner's land and sometimes with produce)
- A house on such farm.
- cottage (small farmhouse)
Usage notes
[edit]- The land ownership system in England differed from that of Sweden and Finland and thus torppa and "copyhold" are not exactly equivalent forms of land tenure.
- If the lessee rented the whole farm, the property was called lampuotitila and the lessee was lampuoti.
