From Proto-Germanic *tebrekaną, *twizbrekaną (to break apart), equivalent to tō- +‎ brecan. Cognate with Old Frisian tōbreka, Old Dutch tebrekan, Old Saxon tebrekan, Old High German zibrehhan (German zerbrechen).
