Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Latin torta, feminine of tortus, perfect passive participle of torqueō. Or from the feminine of Romanian tort as the past participle of toarce, as early handles may have been made from twisted string, fiber, or rope. Compare Calabrian torta ("thread used to connect the yoke and the main shaft of a plow"), Sicilian torta (beating).
