[edit]Inherited from Middle French tavaiolle, from Italian tovagliola (“napkin”), diminutive of tovaglia (“tablecloth”), from Medieval Latin toallia, toacula, duvahila, toacla (“towel”), from Frankish *þwahilu (“cloth”). Doublet of touaille.
