Borrowed from Ancient Greek *ταυρόφθαλμον (*tauróphthalmon), from ταῦρος (taûros, bull, possibly ox) + ὀφθαλμός (ophthalmós, eye). Attested only in Pseudo-Apuleius (c. 4th century CE).
