Swedish

Etymology

[edit]

First part is a borrowing from a Polynesian language, e.g. Samoan tatau (tattoo; to tap, to strike), second part is native common suffix -era. First part is likely to have gone through another European language e.g. French, German or English before it ended up in Swedish, hence probably not a direct loan from Polynesian. Compare Danish tatovere, German tätowieren, French tatouer.
