[edit]From tank + -y (adjectival suffix).
Adjective
[edit]tanky (comparative tankier, superlative tankiest)
- (wine) Having a dank quality resulting from excessive ageing in a tank.
- (gaming) Able to withstand much damage, having a lot of hit points (that is, like a tank).
- 2022 November 17, Carver Fisher, “League of Legends preseason 13 has made tanks unkillable”, in Dexerto[1]:
- The phrase, “tank meta”, is one that carries a lot of weight when it comes to MOBAs. These metas are generally characterized by tanky, unkillable behemoths dominating the meta and leaving any character that isn’t focused around raw DPS in the dust.
Translations
[edit]Etymology 2
[edit]From tank + -y (diminutive suffix). The noun sense is from the fact that the assistant of the navigator of a ship was also in charge of the ship’s water tanks, and later its rations when refrigeration was introduced.[1]
Noun
[edit]tanky (plural tankies)
- (nautical, slang) A sailor who assists the navigator of the ship; a sailor in charge of the ship's hold, and thus responsible for the provision of rations and water.
- Alternative form of tankie (“a soldier from a tank regiment; a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain”).
- (India) A storage tank, especially for water.
