From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *taŋiʀi (Spanish mackerel, kingfish: Scomberomorini spp.). Compare Ilocano tanggigi, Pangasinan tangingi, Kapampangan tangginggi, Cebuano tangigi, Maranao tangigi, Javanese ꦠꦼꦔꦶꦫꦶ (tengiri), and Malay tenggiri.
