[edit]From Proto-Algonquian *takwaha·kana (“mortar, mill”). Cognate with Abenaki taguahôgan (“mill, mortar”), Penobscot takʷáhαkan, tákʷəhαkan (“mortar”), Mohegan-Pequot taqôk (“mortar for pounding corn”), and perhaps Unami kohòkàn (“mortar, mill”).
