Etymology

[edit]

Of uncertain origin and not clearly related to any Germanic languages outside of Old English. Liberman argues that it's best understood as an expressive or sound-symbolic development within Old English. He rejects connections to tosca (toad) and Old High German zuscen (to burn) as weak conjectures.[1]
