   • 1835, William Gilmore Simms, The Partisan, Harper, Chapter IX, page 115:

     Riding a small tackey […] , he was compelled continually to be on the look-out for, and defence against, the overhanging branches and vines clustering about the trees, through which his horse, in its own desire to clamber over the roots, continually and most annoyingly bore him.
