[edit]taaja (“dense”) + -ma; from the earlier concept taajaväkinen yhdyskunta (“densely-populated place”), compare Swedish tätort; coined by Finnish linguist Hannes Teppo in 1940.

- an urban area, a built-up area (i.e. a city, town or village) (per Finnish and Swedish definition a locality with at least 200 inhabitants and up to 200 metres between the buildings; if there is no chain of buildings closer than that to each other between two places, those places are not located in the same locality)
