[edit]From sym- + bio- + -genesis. Coined in German by the Russian lichenologist Konstantin Mereschkowski, in a 1910 paper entitled "Theorie der zwei Plasmaarten als Grundlage der Symbiogenesis, einer neuen Lehre von der Entstehung der Organismen."
