Finnish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Latin Suecia (Sweden) +‎ -ismi, by analogy with terms such as anglismi and latinismi.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈsʋetisismi/, [ˈs̠ʋe̞t̪iˌs̠is̠mi]
  • Rhymes: -ismi
  • Hyphenation(key): sve‧ti‧sis‧mi

Noun

[edit]

svetisismi

  1. A loanword from Swedish.
    Synonym: ruotsin laina
  2. An expression influenced by Swedish, often one that is regarded as non-standard in the target language, particularly in Finnish.
    Synonym: ruotsalaisuus

Usage notes

[edit]
  • There's no established English equivalent for svetisismi, but the term "Sveticism" is used in translated articles on this topic.
  • Sveticisms are particularly abundant in Finnish for two reasons: a) Finland was part of Sweden from 1323 to 1809 and b) there's a sizable Swedish minority in Finland and therefore Swedish is an official language along with Finnish.
