[edit]From Middle High German sudelen, derived Middle High German sudel (“puddle”) + -en, a noun still known in the 20th century as Sudel m, from Proto-Germanic *seud- (“mud; soil”), from Proto-Indo-European *sew- (“moisture”). Cognate with Old English gesyd (“wallow”).
