[edit]Inherited from Middle French sucer, sucher, succer, from Old French sucer, from Vulgar Latin *sūctiāre, derived from the supine stem sūctum of Latin sūgō (“to suck”), from Proto-Indo-European *sewg-, *sewk- (“to suck”).
