Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Latin turdus, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *trosdos. The initial s- may be due to influence by Latin sturnus, and the final -z may be due to the word being reformed from the plural *turzi, or less likely through a Vulgar Latin root *turdeus. Compare Aromanian sturdzu, strudz.
