Inherited from Old Polish strzyż, strzeż, from Proto-Slavic *strižь, *strěžь. Cognates include Lower Sorbian stśěž, Slovak striežik, Russian стриж (striž), Slovene strižec, Serbo-Croatian strež, Latin strix and Ancient Greek στρίξ (stríx).
