[edit]Etymology
[edit]From strēle (“arrow, dart”) + -nieks. First mentioned in 17th-century sources, this word corresponds so well in form and meaning to Old East Slavic стрѣльникъ (strělĭnikŭ, “archer”) that it may have been a calque or borrowing.[1]
