[edit]From Old Norse stofna, from Old Norse stofn (“stem, shoot, offspring”), from Proto-Germanic *stōmną (“offshoot, stem”), probably from *stōmô (“basis, matter”). Cognate with Icelandic stofna (“to establish”), Old English stofn (“sapling, sprout, shoot, twig”).
