storm-racked
Appearance
English
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Variant of storm-wracked.
Adjective
[edit]storm-racked (not comparable)
- (idiomatic, proscribed) Destroyed by a storm.
Usage notes
[edit]Etymologically incorrect, due to confusion of rack (“torture, suffer”) with wrack (“destroy”). Correct is storm-wracked, which is accordingly preferred by style guides; however, both are common and well-established. Unusually, storm-racked replaces wrack with rack; other confusions instead replace rack with wrack. See usage notes for rack for details.
