From Middle Dutch stîge. Has been compared to Ancient Greek στίχος (stíkhos, row, line). If indeed related, from Proto-Indo-European *steygʰ- (to walk, go, ascend).

Cognate with Middle Low German stîge (whence German Stiege), Crimean Gothic stega (twenty).
