[edit]Likely borrowed from Middle Low German sterke (“starch, stiffness, strength”), from Old Saxon *sterkī, from Proto-West Germanic *starkī. Cognate with English starch, German Stärke (“starch”), dialectal Dutch sterk (“starch”). Compare also Swedish stärkelse (“starch”).
