Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *stebʰ-h₁-yé-ti, the essive present of *stebʰ- (to stand still, harden; prop up, support; pole).[1] By synchronic analysis, an iterative formation of stèbti (to be amazed, astonished),[2] itself from the above root. The sense development is "to stand still" > "to be amazed" > "to observe".
