star plate (plural star plates)

  1. (construction) A star-shaped anchor plate used in conjunction with a tie rod.
    • 1954 January, “Strengthening of Coquet Viaduct”, in Railway Magazine, page 18:
      In 1925, to counteract an observed outward movement of the spandrel walls, star plates and tierods were fixed to each span.
