stable fly
Appearance

The most widely recognized species of stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, resembles a smallish housefly, but, instead of the sponging mouthparts of a housefly, has a hard, dark, forward-projecting proboscis, capable of piercing an animal's skin for sucking blood.
