[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Middle High German stork, or from Middle Dutch stork, both from Proto-West Germanic *stork (compare German Storch, English stork).
The long vowel comes from the long level-tone syllable in the original forms (star̃ks > stārks). This word is first mentioned in 18th-century dictionaries.[1]
