[edit]Compare Danish stodder and Swedish ståtare. From stòta (“to studder, to waggle”) (cf. Swedish ståta (“to push, to studder”)). But according to the Danish Dictionary, all the Scandinavian cognates are from Old Norse stakra (“to waggle, stagger”).
